Hair loss is a complex topic that encompasses various aspects of human physiology and pathology.
Hair Cycle: Hair on the scalp goes through a natural cycle consisting of three phases:
Each hair follicle can be in a specific stage of the cycle, resulting in different hair lengths and densities.
Androgenetic Alopecia: The most common cause of hair loss in both men and women is androgenetic alopecia. This is a genetically determined form of hair loss caused by an oversensitivity of the hair follicles to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone derived from testosterone. Over time, the follicles shrink and produce shorter, thinner hairs until they eventually stop producing hair altogether.
Alopecia Areata: This type of hair loss occurs when the immune system attacks and destroys hair follicles. It leads to sharply defined areas of hair loss on the scalp or other parts of the body. Alopecia areata can occur spontaneously and disappear, or it can become chronic.
Traction Alopecia: This form of hair loss is caused by prolonged tension on the hair follicles, such as from tight hairstyles, dreadlocks, or wearing headgear. The follicles may become damaged and stop producing hair.
Medication-Induced Hair Loss: Certain medications, such as chemotherapy drugs, antidepressants, or blood thinners, can cause hair loss as a side effect. The hair loss may be reversible after discontinuing the medication.
The diagnosis of hair loss often involves a physical examination and a thorough medical history, including identifying risk factors and underlying conditions. The doctor may also take a hair sample for laboratory testing to determine the exact cause of the hair loss.
